Pruritus Ani (Anal Itching) Treatment
Pruritus ani is persistent itching or irritation around the anus. Moisture, over-cleaning, scented products, minor leakage, piles, skin conditions or infection may contribute. Scratching damages the skin barrier and creates an itch-scratch cycle that can make symptoms progressively worse.
Assessment looks for an underlying anorectal or dermatological cause and reviews hygiene, bowel habits, diet and products used in the area. Treatment may include gentle cleansing, keeping the skin dry, barrier protection, stool regulation and a short course of medication selected for the identified cause.
Patients are advised to avoid harsh soaps, vigorous wiping and unprescribed steroid combinations. Improvement may be gradual as the skin heals. Persistent symptoms, bleeding, discharge, a lump or a visible skin change should be reviewed rather than repeatedly self-treated.
