Pilonidal Sinus (PNS) Surgery

Pilonidal sinus is a small tract or cavity near the tailbone that can collect hair and repeatedly become inflamed or infected. It may cause pain, swelling, discharge or an abscess, particularly after prolonged sitting. Examination defines the number of openings and whether active infection is present.

An acute abscess may first require drainage. For recurrent or persistent disease, surgery removes or closes the sinus using a technique chosen for its size, branching and previous procedures. The aim is complete treatment with a practical wound and the lowest reasonable risk of recurrence.

Aftercare includes keeping the area clean and dry, wound or dressing instructions, hair control and avoiding prolonged pressure during early healing. Reviews allow the surgeon to monitor closure, manage drainage and advise when sitting, driving, exercise and work can safely resume.
